The effects of home environment on the academic performance of children in primary Schools in Nsambya Parish, Kampala District(Uganda)

Abstract

This study was carried out in Nsambya Parish in Kampala District. It attempted to establish the extent to which the home environment affects school achievement of a primary school child. The research questions used to guide the study were centered on the impact of socio-economic status and attitude of the parents on the performance of their children at school. The literature review availed a multiplicity of circumstances in the homes that had impact on children. Random sampling and stratified sampling were used to collect data. The sample was split into three strata drawn from the population under study: 90 respondents were parents; 90 were pupils and 30 were teachers. Questionnaires were administered to the pupils and teachers, and the interviews were conducted for parents. Data analysis was based on percentages. It was concluded that family size, socio-economic background, parents' attitude and education level of the parents affected the performance of the pupils at school.
